The right help at the right time!PARTICIPANT SAFETYNetwork-wide safe clinical practices reduce the risk of harm to participants through collaborative effort between CIGNA and its behavioral practitioners and facility providers. Active commitment by CIGNA and by practitioners and providers helps to assure that participants are afforded safe and effective treatment experiences. CIGNA regularly measures and analyzes data about such things as timely access, continuity and coordination of care, consistency of treatment with clinical practice guidelines, and other quality/utilization measures. We also monitor patient safety improvement actions taken by network practitioners and facility providers. Results for clinical and service activities are currently shared in our national newsletter, in focused E-briefs, in our facility newsletter or in participant articles made available on our Web site. CIGNA routinely reports performance information to both high volume inpatient facilities and to practitioners who meet minimum volume criteria for treatment of 20 participants. These reports also provide national, state, child/adolescent, and adult comparisons. Facility metrics that are communicated now include: length of stay, denial rates, readmission rates, and 30 day ambulatory follow-up rates. Practitioner metrics include: engagement rate, treatment measures, and participant satisfaction ratings for access and improvement. CIGNA's plan to promote network-wide safe clinical practice in 2009 includes helping participants to make informed choices about the treatment they seek. In 2009, greater access to safety information will be made available through planned changes in our Web site. Web site capabilities will make information about performance, improvement opportunities, and aggregated results more easily available for review by practitioners, providers, and participants. Enhanced transparency will result, and CIGNA believes that improvements in quality, service and safety will be the outcome. Watch for more announcements as we implement our 2009 safety plan. Additionally, participants, practitioners and providers will continue to receive annual notification of these and other resources available on the CIGNA behavioral Web site.
