ANNOUNCEMENTS

Level of Care Guidelines

In May 2007, CIGNA Behavioral Health (CBH) formally adopted the 2006 revision of its Level of Care Guidelines. CBH’s Level of Care Guidelines are based on appropriate medical evidence, or evidence-based practice, and are consistent with our Clinical Practice Guidelines for condition-specific management of illness.

The criteria are applied in utilization management decision-making, based on case-by-case need and with consideration of the availability of services in local delivery systems. Annually, CBH measures the consistency with which clinical staff and physician reviewers apply the Level of Care Guidelines and conducts training and/or other improvement actions as needed. Existing practitioners are notified of CBH’s website resources in an annual mailing, while new practitioners receive notification as part of contracting materials.

Periodically, the Level of Care Guidelines are updated to reflect recent changes in the research and literature on treatment, and for consistency with the American Psychiatric Association and other practice guidelines adopted by CBH. In 2006, new guidelines were added on Safety of Transfer, Methadone Maintenance, differentiation of the need for crisis stabilization versus use of a 24-hour stabilization bed, and for Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention for Autism. You can freely download and access the full text of the revised Level of Care Guidelines ©2006 here.

Additionally, the Web page includes a feedback mechanism for submission of practitioner input and feedback concerning the guidelines.

Clinician’s Guide for Alcohol Use Disorders

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has revised its clinician’s guide entitled “Helping Patients Who Drink Too Much.” The guide is written for primary care and behavioral clinicians, and has been adopted for use by CBH. The approach to alcohol screening and intervention remain unchanged, but the new guide contains increased information and tools for practitioners and families. The revised guide is available on CBH’s website for free download and use, and you can find it here.

Clinical Screening Tools

CBH’s Quarter 2 2006 newsletter reported an increasing trend toward the use of validated clinical screening instruments to identify individuals with an undiagnosed disorder and to monitor changes in the severity of symptoms for participants in treatment over time. Since that time, we have worked to assemble a collection of several validated and well-respected screening tools and, where necessary, we have obtained permission from copyright holders for the Internet distribution of these tools to our practitioner network. We are proud to announce the creation of a new Web page where you can find several clinical screening tools and instructions for their use. We encourage you to explore these resources here.

CBH Named Best EAP for Third Straight Year

Readers of Business Insurance® magazine once again chose CIGNA Behavioral Health’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) as the best EAP in the industry. Selected from among ten of the largest EAP companies for the publication’s Readers Choice Awards, CBH was recognized for its long-term commitment to service, value, quality and innovation. This is the third consecutive year Business Insurance readers have selected CBH’s EAP as the best EAP.

“The EAP program provides an important entry point into the health care system,” said Keith Dixon, president of CIGNA Behavioral Health, Inc. “Our team, which averages 23 years of clinical experience, works with individual members to assist them in developing strategies to manage life’s complexities.”

The CIGNA Behavioral Health EAP includes services for participants and their families, in addition to resources for business managers. Participants can contact CBH by phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and directly access network providers with no referrals.

Self Introduction Contest – Attestation

On August 1st CBH announced a contest to increase practitioner Self Introductions on our website. See what one practitioner has to say about our Self Introductions:

“I have had many referrals from CBH through the website,” said Lois Schatz, LP, PSYD in New York. “My patients even tell me that they came to me because they like what I had to say and they felt like they knew me and felt I could be empathetic. Since I have gotten so many referrals this way, I have called other managed care companies to see if they do this and they do not. This is definitely one way CBH stands out.”

Here’s our contest:

Without Photo: Those who complete, or have completed, a Self Introduction by the end of the year will be entered into a drawing for one of three $25.00 Starbucks gift cards.
