It is this experience that anews our fears and vulnerabilities. These anxieties, if persistent, can result in stress-related illnesses, decreased productivity at work, and a poorer quality of life. Nevertheless, because we cannot control the big picture, we are well-advised to focus on areas where we do have control. A companion document to this one, titled simply Coping with Fear in Turbulent Times, is intended for all employees and is aimed at helping employees take care of themselves and those around them during such shooting attacks. The present document is written as a companion to that one, and is aimed at helping managers understand what additional steps they can take to help their employees make this adjustment. Tips for Managers and Supervisors Managers and supervisors have a special role in helping their employees adjust in a healthy way to changes in their environment. Here are some actions to consider, as the situation warrants: Communicate with your employees. When major news breaks, a message should go out to all employees from a senior manager. It should convey the gravity of the situation, and reflect the normal fears and anxieties that we all share; it should list any steps the organization is taking to ensure the safety of its employees; and remind employees of resources available to them in the community and through their jobs, including the EAP. Provide updates, or access to information, as subsequent news breaks. Expect productivity to be lower at such times, and be patient and compassionate about it. Consider getting employees together for lunch or a snack, to tap into group dynamics for support. If you have concerns about how individual employees are reacting, or the effect on your workforce in general, call your EAP for a critical incident management consultation. If your site is significanlty impacted, consider scheduling a critical incident stress debriefing group, through the EAP. Be aware that on occasion an individual will have more intense reactions than are typical; for example, panic attacks, crying, profound sadness or depression, confused thinking, and/or urges to self-medicate with alcohol or drugs. Persons at risk for such intense reactions include those whose lives were directly impacted by the event in question or similar events; those who have experienced prior losses or traumas and for whom the current events serve to reactivate the emotions; and those who are vulnerable to stress due to a mental, emotional, or substance abuse disorder. Employers should be sensitive to the fact that intense reactions may result from unseen personal factors such as the above. The best course for managers is to be patient, signal your willingness to talk about it, practice active listening, be supportive, problem-solve with the employee around covering their work responsibilities, and make sure they know where to get help. If they are already in treatment they should contact their therapist for an appointment. If they are not, a referral to the EAP would be a good place to start.
